These are permanent upgrades to various objects that players can use in cities at the beginning of each "Act".Over the Obelisk. So, let's see what exactly city upgrades do, how to unlock them, what are the methods for upgrading upgrades, and which ones to focus on first.in this highly underrated roguelike deck builder.
What City Updates Really Are

When players start the race inOver the Obelisk, the first node of the map they must go to is "Starting City". This location is a small city courtyard where players can prepare the party for the next adventure. In this starting city courtyard, players have a total of 5 different buildings and objects to interact with, each with their own unique features:
Place name | Function |
---|---|
Magic Forge | Where players "build" specific cards for their deck with shards, store deck builds, and generally tidy up their starting decks. |
Altar | Where players can spend Shards on certain cards to upgrade them to one of two possible enhanced versions. |
Church | A place where players can pay to remove cards from their deck to the minimum required for each deck. |
zing wagon | A chariot where players can spend gold to activate divination of various rarities that normally occur after battles. |
Arsenal | A building where players can spend gold to equip teammates with other gear, with the option to reroll the option. |
City upgrades simply upgrade these different locations/facilities in different ways to improve them or reduce the "costs" that players must invest to use them to their full potential.
How to unlock city upgrades

Now because city updates are permanent upgrades, a genre built around the idea of "starting over" every time you launch, it should be clear that they often have quite a big impact. A player who has obtained all city upgrades has an inconceivable better starting point for his runs than a player who does not have city upgrades. But how do players get/unlock these upgrades? City upgrades are basically "purchased" resources, the in-game currency to the right of the Shard currency meter in the upper left corner of the UI, indicated by the brown box icon. Think of spending your stockpile on upgrades as implementing an in-game merchant "investing" in building materials and other supplies in a city they often pass through to get more of that city.
To obtain supplies, players must defeat different bosses in different "acts" of the game, risk their races by accepting and completing corruption challenges, or interact with certain map events at certain nodes and make certain choices. After accumulating a significant amount of supplies (which are stored during races), players can spend them in any starting city on any map to unlock city upgrades. As they buy more and more upgrades, the cost of supplies increases, from a measly 1 shipment per upgrade to a whopping 15 supplies for the best upgrades.
And for those wondering what players should do with their supplies after unlocking all city upgrades, don't worry as there is actually an upgrade that allows players to sell surplus supplies for shards and gold, so this feature is still useful even after unlocking all updates.
The best way to upgrade your city

How much city updates can affect aOver the Obeliskrun, it only makes sense for players to want to get a huge supply crate as soon as possible. What exactly is the best and/or fastest way to achieve this?
Well, to be fair, supply farming is the most efficient (and easiest) thing to doOver the Obeliskjust play as the developers intended and try to get as far as possible in each run (which will be many). The further the player progresses, the more events they will encounter that can bring supplies, the more action bosses they will fight rewarding supplies upon death, and those who offer reward supplies will have more opportunities to mod corruption.
Of course, there are probably "hyper-efficient" methods players have come up with to get supplies, quickly getting to Ylmer (act 1 boss), killing him, then intentionally missing the race to unleash and stop the process. repeat to make provisioning easier, but doing so is completely unnecessary and anti-fun.
Instead, players just have to focus on making progress while collecting agricultural supplies, which in itself can be difficult as it doesn't require players to take a lot of risk.trying to unlock new characters, go through certain map node paths or face very hard corruption challenges.
Which upgrades to buy first
Finally, it's time to move on to the most important aspect of city upgrades.Over the Obelisk, which is our recommendation for updates that players want to receive first. Information about the 36 updates available inAtO, here are the best ones to buy or keep for starters, as well as the most popular in each shipping cost category:
delivery costs | Which locations to update first | Reasoning |
---|---|---|
1 supply box | Church, altar, arsenal | Upgrading the Church should be a good idea, as being able to remove cards for free in the starting city makes starting deck building much more versatile. The choice of Altar means players can morph cards and experiment in general. Finally, the Armory option allows players who had a lot of gold in their last run to reroll their options for some super-powerful starting gear. |
3 consumables | Zangar Cart, Magic Forge, Global | Basic guesswork is cheap and very rewarding, making the cart easy to pick up at first. Since crafting is cheaper, players can build more decks that are perfect for their starting city characters. Finally, the pet shop is essential to unlock when players access their first pet (regardless of which one they unlock first). |
6 Consumables | Altar, Arsenal, Global | Altar has the same logic as the first Supply Box update, but is now 50 percent instead of 25. The Armory update allows higher rarity items to spawn in the Armory, which can really unbalance the game if players are lucky. . And for the global upgrade, it's a currency lock upgrade that should almost always be done when the player has resources available. |
9 Consumables | Magic Forge, church, altar, around the world | Crafting rare cards in the starting city in the Magic Forge can make Act 1 easier. For the Church, reducing the cost of healing wounds simply means that players don't have to worry as much about their choices in map events. Updating Altar is also pretty self-explanatory, as lower update costs mean more map updates overall. And as for the last option, Caravan Node allows players to skip entire parts of the game, although it is a risk reward option. |
12 stocks | Church, altar, arsenal, global | Reducing the cost of removing cards in the church by 50% means players don't have to be as careful when removing cards outside of the starting city. The free transformation cost at the altar is honestly one of the best upgrades in the game, bar none. Upgrading the Arsenal to reduce the cost of items by 30% makes it much easier to fully equip your team at the start of a run. And finally, upgrading the global currency simply means more resources for overall mileage. |
15 stocks | Church, altar, around the world | Free card removal at the church in the second city may not seem like much, but it allows players to reduce decks that may have been blown up with too much zeal. For Altar, the 50% reduction in upgrade costs means players can really experience upgrades on certain higher rarity cards without breaking the bank. Finally, unlocking the ability to sell additional supplies allows players who have already acquired all city upgrades to amass a treasure trove of gold and shards over multiple runs. |
