OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M Guide (2023)

The perfect combination of performance and value, with plenty of variety to choose from.

Originally published by Logan Baker forCLOCKJune 9, 2020

The OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M has somehow held a prominent position in the OMEGA range since 1993 and has built a strong following in just over 25 years. Two years ago, the Swiss brand significantly updated the collection, adding in-house Master Chronometer-certified movements and bringing back key design elements from the model's past, such as the laser-engraved wave motif on the dial, the Skeleton Handset, the serrated bezel and the Lollipop second hand.

The Seamaster name has a long and proud tradition at OMEGA, but in our opinion it has never had a better combination of specification, design and value for money than in its current form, the contemporary Seamaster Diver 300M.

As the summer heat began to set in in the northern hemisphere, we felt it was time to spice up our existing Seamaster Diver 300M collection a bit, and today we are doing just that by adding six new variations to the HODINKEE store. That's right: we're adding more options to our curated OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M collection than ever before.

Most of these watches follow the same format that the model has been identified with since its redesign in 2018. It starts with a very handy case profile with a diameter of 42 mm and a height of 13.5 mm. You also get rhodium-plated skeleton hands with different luminescent colors (blue for the hour hand and green for the minute hand), so there are no issues with underwater readability. The straps, of course, have Seamaster's recognizable round facets, and the watch strap has the same immersion elongation that has been with the watch since the early 1990s. The longtime Seamaster 300M will appreciate it.

The Seamaster Diver 300M retails for $5,000 including change (less than that on some variants), and is a professional dive watch tested to 300 meters and equipped with a true master chronometer certified internal movement. It's beautiful too, with laser-engraved dials featuring the model's signature waves and ceramic bezel inserts (meaning the color won't fade and the chance of the bezel scratching or damaging is near zero). Oh, and while we're not big on celebrity or pop culture partnerships, we'd be negligent not to mention that this is the latest evolution of a watch that's been a James Bond favorite since 1995.

A notable detail of the redesigned Seamaster Diver 300M was the new cone-shaped helium escape valve, which is configured to make the watch resistant to water damage up to 50 meters if accidentally left open. The overall finish of the case is excellent and meets OMEGA standards, with alternating brushed and polished surfaces on the case and bezel edges. The presence of the OMEGA 8800 caliber marks the first use of a fully internal caliber in the Seamaster 300M family (previous Seamaster 300M models had a modified ETA 2892 with OMEGA coaxial escapement) and is certified by METAS as a Master Chronometer, Startup. This means more than just a guarantee of accuracy - it also means that the watch has been tested for increased shock protection and can withstand magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss, a number unprecedented in the history of watchmaking.

Five of the Seamaster Diver 300Ms added to the HODINKEE store today continue to adhere to these specific aesthetic principles. The strap features a white dial with a black ceramic bezel, a black dial with a matching black rubber strap, and a blue dial on the strap. All three were previously available from the HODINKEE store in various configurations and you know you have more options to choose from than ever before.

Today, a new variant hit the HODINKEE store for the first time, a variant with a gray dial with a blue bezel and available with either a bracelet or a blue rubber strap. The gray dial adds a sunny finish to the laser etched wave which adds a bit of extra texture to the overall look. The dial is made of ceramic like the other Seamaster 300M models, but the sunburst effect adds a different kind of character as the other ceramic dial versions look a bit more flashy. You can see a good mix of high and low in this gray dial. Blue accents on the dial, hour markers, a date window and a ceramic bezel insert enhance the readability of the dial. It is the perfect complement to the entire Seamaster Diver 300M range.

Finally, the latest Seamaster Diver 300M update for the HODINKEE store deviates from the standard variant today. While the overall design of the 300M remains the same, the execution of the material is completely different. Instead of stainless steel, this Seamaster Diver 300M has a case - as well as the dial, buckle and bezel insert - made entirely of black ceramic, while the caseback, bezel, crown, hands, hour markers and safety valve are now made of Grade 5 titanium. But the differences don't stop at the material used, OMEGA has also increased the case profile to 43.5mm (from 42mm) and the laser engraved wave motif on the dial is convex rather than concave like on the standard Seamaster 300M. The overall look is as bold and luxurious as it is understated.

Part of what makes this watch so great is the tonal design - all black with a hint of gray - that creates a sleek, monochrome look unlike almost every other Seamaster in the current lineup. This is an interesting exercise in dark tones and looks fantastic on the wrist. OMEGA uses the Master Chronometer caliber 8806, which, as you may have noticed from the watch face, is undated. Extensive use of high-quality materials has raised the price of this Seamaster Diver 300M from an initial collection price of around $5,000 to $8,100. Although this watch is also available inblack rubber bracelet, the eye-catching black and gray NATO strap with the OMEGA logo seen here also looks really cool.
